🚗 Away Day Guide: Swindon Town

1 February 2022

Back on the road Exeter City travel to Swindon on Saturday to take on the Wiltshire outfit.

In our first trip to the County Ground since 2020, here’s a reminder of what to expect.

Stadium

  • Name: The Energy Check County Ground
  • Capacity: 15,728
  • Year opened: 1892
  • Record Attendance: 32,000 (v Arsenal, FA Cup Third Round 1972)
  • Address: County Road, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN1 2ED

The County Ground has had a mixed purpose history since being opened to replace The Croft. Thomas Arkell, the owner of Arkell’s Brewery first donated £300 to build a stand at the Wiltshire County Ground, though the funds were enough to build the entire stadium.

During the war the stadium was used as a Prisoner of War camp, with huts built on the pitch to house the German POW’s. In 1951, Swindon Town became the first club to have floodlight’s fitted and the new lamps were first tested against Bristol City in April that year.

In another quirk, the Energy Check County Ground is the only football stadium in the world to have a Rolex clock, which was erected in 1963. City fans will be housed in the Arkell’s John Trollope Stand and the uncovered Stratton Bank end.

Pubs and Matchday refreshments

The County Ground is surrounded by a number of pubs. City fans are welcomed into the designated away end bar, ‘Bar 71’. Just outside Swindon station, two pubs adjacent, the Queens Tap and Great Western Hotel have been friendly for away visitors in the past.

Five minutes from the ground along Drove Road, the Merlin (Greene King) is a keen spot for travelling fans, with big screens, outside gardens and a good range of food and drinks.

Around the ground there are refreshment kiosks, and in the main car park there is a burger bar.

Swindon Town's Official Matchday Programme, which features an extensive look at the away team, will be priced at £3 and can be purchased from a number of sellers outside The County Ground.

You can also purchase a programme from The STFC Store, which is located at the bottom of the main car park.

Safeguarding

Both clubs are committed to the EFL Ground regulations an remind supporters that racist, sexist homophobic and other offensive behaviour will never be tolerated in our game or wider society. Swindon Town operate an anonymous reporting system, by contacting you nearest steward, if you experience any criminal behaviour.

We’d also like to kindly remind supporters that pyrotechnics are illegal. If incidents of this nature are reported, the Football Association have the power to impose serious sanctions on our club.

1100 Grecians have already purchased tickets for Saturday and there are still more available in advance only. Your support and atmosphere created has been nothing short of brilliant this season! We can’t wait to see you in Wiltshire backing the boys again! Come on you Reds!
