📝 Women's Preview: Plymouth Argyle (Devon County Cup Final)

City look to retain the silverware

19 April 2024

Exeter City Women head to Coach Road on Friday evening for a repeat of last season’s Devon County Cup Final, a venue the Grecians were victorious at last year after a penalty shootout success.

Ryan Perks’ side have had a steady season, currently sat in ninth but most importantly well clear of any relegation concerns. Six wins have put Argyle in the mix for a higher league finish than last year, four of those coming on the road as a multitude of home venues has not helped with consistency - the Greens have failed to win a home league fixture since the beginning of November.

Undoubtedly, the star for Argyle this season has been Ellie Sara, the young forward hitting twenty-five goals in a breakthrough season since her summer arrival from Bridgwater United. Charlotte Whatmore has had another consistent season, contributing nine goals, whilst Imogen Crawford, Panagiota Papaioannou, Jemma Rose, Kathryn Dickson and Lucy Hack provide a familiar feel to the Argyle line-up.

The two teams did meet back in September, the Greens running out 4-1 winners at the Hub with a Sara hat trick the difference between the two sides. The road to the final emphasises a tough year for the County Cup, City arrive in the final with two byes, whilst the Pilgrims played only once in a semi-final against Torquay United.

Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley will face a selection headache ahead of the tie, a key league fixture on Sunday against Bridgwater United coming shortly after Friday’s final.

However, the Grecians squad is a strong one and whoever is selected will go into the contest confident of causing another upset against the higher division Greens, securing a third County Cup in four years in the process.
