Matchday Family Fun: Wigan Athletic

Matchday Family Fun: Wigan Athletic

Matchday Family Fun Wigan

They Will Not Grow Old… We Will Remember Them.

Saturday's match features of renowned Remembrance Service, so please arrive early as the turnstiles will fall silent from 2:55 whilst the Remembrance is observed.

On Saturday we welcome Wigan Athletic, Will Aimson and Ryan Trevitt back to your SJP.  It should be a really interesting match. Both games ended in draws last season. Whilst we won at Wigan two seasons ago, the Latics have not lost here in their last 8 visits...

Your match day at SJP is not just about the 90 minutes of football! There is far more to Exeter City and not just on a match day.

Remembrance

On Saturday from 2:50pm both clubs will be observing our small Remembrance Together event. The bars will have poppies and collection boxes available. Card donations can be made online at britishlegion.org.uk

Wreaths will be laid by both Teams and supporters from Exeter and Wigan.  Our distinguished guests will be the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lieutenant for Devon. They will respectively be laying wreath on behalf of the citizens of Exeter and HM King Charles and the County of Devon. Bugler, Cpl Ian Chave, will sound the last post before a minutes silence falls across the Stadium beginning and ending on the referee’s whistle.

Thanks to Cans4City and to boost the Royal Legion funds the players will be warming up in with t-shirts bearing the names of City players lost in combat embroidered in our badge.  These will be signed post-match, collected and auctioned for RBL.

Question for a small prize

Travel Guide

St James Park Station

Getting to SJP on match days (EX4 6PX – visiting fans EX4 6PU) cannot be easier for you.

Despite being in the heart of Exeter’s bustling city centre, getting to SJP on match days couldn’t be easier!

BUS: Local buses drop off and pick up in York Road, Pennsylvania Road, Prince Charles Road, Union Road, Sidwell Street, Old Tiverton Road and Pinhoe Road. All around the Stadium and less than a minute from the Stadium. Maximum single fare still £3 single journey. Just a few yards further and you will find the bus station which receives county and national services.

RAIL: St James Park boasts the only operating matchday station in the whole of the EFL! The station sits on the London Waterloo line out of the City & has become a match day hub with regular services running from Exeter St. David’s, Exeter Central, Exmouth & Paignton, Okehampton and Barnstaple.

Match Day timetable changes mean that trains calling at all stations from Okehampton and Barnstaple are extended to finish at St James Park (Exeter) station.  Passengers from London Waterloo should change at either Pinhoe or Exeter Central for services to St James Park. Passengers from London Paddington, Cornwall and from Liverpool/Manchester or further north should change at Exeter St. David’s. A return fare from Exeter St. David’s costs £2.70 but is free if travelling from further afield and St James Park selected as your destination at the time of booking. Returns services continue from 21:51.

DRIVING: No traffic issues anticipated. Why not still use Park & Ride? City Centre car parks will be much quieter than normal. Please read boards as some are free after 6pm. And others, like the local King William Street, stay open longer on evening match days. Greatly reduced on street parking available for sensible parkers.

CYCLING: racks are available for you at the stadium and throughout Sidwell Street.

PARKING: There is extremely limited parking at our stadium, with several city-centre car parks within fairly close range. There is also limited on-street parking for considerate drivers. Wherever possible, we recommend the use of public transport, Park & Ride services, or active transport (walking & cycling) to reach St James Park on matchday.

There are no major traffic delays expected.

Family Areas at SJP and Tickets

We pride ourselves that your SJP is virtually a family stadium. Block E in the Nevada Construction Main Stand is the principal area. The second area we recommend is Black A in the Optimising IT Adam Stansfield Stand. The stand has been decorated by the Museum Trust with lots of standout pictures and impressive stories regaling the history of your club.

The newest stand features in its under croft two Red and Fed kiosks, a Legends bar for grownups, a plethora of widescreen TVs featuring the televised game pre-match and the half time results service. The stand now boasts a new retail outlet where you can purchase all your genuine Grecian merchandise.  There is also a changing places facility. With so much going on it’s no wonder the stand normally opens an hour earlier than all the other stands. The final area is on the Big Bank denoted by a red floor and white barriers.

Three helpful tips for parents you on your first visit:

  • The stadium can be noisy - especially when City score a goal. Consider ear defenders (which will also minimise any local deviation from the King’s English);
  • Make sure youngsters have an emergency contact number in case they get split up from you;
  • And always check the weather before your journey so that you have appropriate clothing. The forecast for your Match Day Saturday is for a warm afternoon!
