We are delighted to announce the signing of Ethan Sutherland on a season-long loan from Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 20-year-old left wing-back joins the Grecians ahead of Monday night’s Carabao Cup first-round tie against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park and goes straight into Matt Taylor’s squad for the Devon derby.
Sutherland began his footballing journey in the academies of Rangers and St Mirren before making the move south of the border to join Wolves in the summer of 2024.
Having made four first-team appearances for St Mirren, Sutherland also gained valuable senior experience during a loan spell with Alloa Athletic, before returning to Wolves and establishing himself as an important member of their Under-21 side.
The Scotland youth international enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign, scoring five goals and providing seven assists in 33 appearances for Wolves U21. His performances earned him recognition at first-team level, with Sutherland included in the Wolves matchday squad on three occasions in the Premier League last season.
Primarily a left wing-back, Sutherland is comfortable operating further forward as a winger and can also play as a traditional left-back, giving Taylor another versatile option down the left side.
Speaking about the arrival of Sutherland, City manager Matt Taylor said: “Ethan is an exciting young talent who will provide competition for places down our left side.
“He has a fantastic left foot and will be an asset for us, particularly with his ability to deliver from dead-ball situations.
“Ethan is young and there is still a lot for him to learn. He will need to continue to develop physically, but we’re excited that Wolves have trusted us to help with that development during his loan spell.
“He’s a player with a lot of potential and we’re looking forward to working with him and helping him take the next step in his career. Ethan will go straight into the matchday squad for tonight’s game.”
Ethan will wear the No.23 shirt during his time at St James Park.
