Goalkeeper gives reaction to England call-up
Most young footballers can only dream of the chance to play international football – and Grecians goalkeeper is getting the chance to turn that into a reality, after once again being selected for the England Under-20 squad. The youngster has been called up to play in a round-robin tournament in Heerenveen in the Netherlands next week along with fellow teenager Matt Grimes. They will both be available to play against their German counterparts, but will return to Devon to face Hartlepool United in League 2 before their international teammates complete the fixtures against the host nation and Turkey.
Following a pre-season trip to Brazil, It represents another chance to pick up another stamp in the passport to go on a football tour for the young pair.
And Christy praised the form of teammate Matt and the coaching staff for giving him the opportunity to keep on impressing.
“It’s nice to be able to show that it’s not a one-off and that me and Grimesy deserve it,” Christy said. “We’re doing well and we proved last time that we were away that we were good enough to be there.
“I can’t speak too much for Matt, but he has been excellent for us and scored a few goals – he’s doubled his tally from last year! He’s flying – he’s a great player and a talented lad and he’ll do well wherever he is.
“For me, it’s about playing as many games as I can play. I’m happy here at Exeter playing games, and I’ve got a good backing from the manager and Mel [Gwinnett] and all the staff – they’ve given me the confidence to be playing more so than the England call-up.
“As I’ve said before, it’s a dream and I’m living it at the moment. It’s a nice thing to be able to say that I’ve done and if I can keep doing it, then even better.”
