Goalie puts pen to paper for the Grecians
Goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik has today signed for Exeter City and becomes the newest member of Paul Tisdale’s squad. The 28-year-old stopper, who originally hails from Austria, is the third summer signing for the Grecians following the arrival of Manny Oyeleke at the end of the season and Lee Holmes’ decision to stay following his loan move from Preston North End.
Olejnik departed hometown club Austria Vienna in 2003 and joined the Academy setup at Aston Villa. He would go on to join Falkirk in 2007, where he would spend four seasons and make over a century of appearances for the Bairns, during which time he also featured 13 times for the Austrian Under-21 squad.
He moved back to England in 2011 to join Torquay United – he impressed during his single season at Plainmoor by making a record-breaking 20 clean-sheets as part of a Gulls team which made the League 2 play-offs. The stopper’s rich form led to him being snapped up a year later by Championship side Peterborough.
Olejnik was an ever-present in the league during his first campaign with the Posh, and then played a whopping 57 times in 2013/14 as his side lifted the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy; he narrowly missed out on another trip to Wembley when Peterborough were defeated by Leyton Orient in the play-off semi-finals. One of his 22 clean-sheets came in a 2-0 win against Exeter City in the first round of the FA Cup that season.
He also kept a shut-out on the only other time he lined up against the Grecians, which came in a 0-0 draw as a York City loanee last season. The goalie had spent the first three months of the season on loan with Scunthorpe United, before joining the Minstermen in January.
Now Olejnik brings a wealth of Football League experience to St James Park with him, and will link up with his new teammates when pre-season training begins at the end of June.
