So here is a run-down to some of the key fixture dates to take a note of…
Opening and closing weekend
The opening day of the season is always an exciting one – let alone when it’s a derby game. This year we host Yeovil Town on Saturday 8th August to kick off the campaign. Bookending the year is a trip to Luton Town – City close the season there on Saturday 7th May.
Local derbies
After opening up against Yeovil, the Grecians head down to Huish Park on Saturday 9th April for the return game. Conference play-off winners Bristol Rovers visit the Park on Saturday 28th November and Exeter make the trip to the Mem on Saturday 23rd April. But the Devon Derby against Plymouth Argyle, undeniably, is the big one – it’ll be an away trip on Saturday 21st November, and a home tie on Saturday 2nd April. It looks like April 2016 is set to be an exciting month.
Christmas and Easter
Our Boxing Day clash is a trip to face Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium. And because Boxing Day falls on a Saturday this year, Monday 28th December is a Bank Holiday – we’ll host AFC Wimbledon on that day. Easter Monday, meanwhile, see Exeter travel to Crawley Town for their first away match against the Red Devils in the Football League.
Former players
After Liam Sercombe’s Oxford United side have hosted Exeter on Boxing Day, the former City midfielder makes his homecoming to St James Park on Saturday 6th February. Also departing the club this summer was Scot Bennett, who returns to SJP with Notts County on Saturday 24th October – the return journey comes on Saturday 19th March. And City supporters may be interested to know that Portsmouth, who have James Dunne and Paul Jones in their ranks, will play Exeter on two Tuesday-night clashes. The first is at St James Park on Tuesday 29th September, and the second is at Fratton Park on Tuesday 1st March.
Midweek fixtures
Postponements and cup runs might necessitate a few more midweek clashes – but at present, there are just six midweek games scheduled. These are the home and away games against Portsmouth (Tuesday 29th September and Tuesday 1st March respectively), a home clash with Cambridge United (Tuesday 20th October), and both games against Mansfield Town (away on Tuesday 24th November and home on Tuesday 19th April). But the first comes early doors as Dagenham & Redbridge host City on Tuesday 18th August.
Long away trips
Travelling Grecians don’t have to wait too long for the first punishing journey – Accrington Stanley is the first of the truly gruelling distances to overcome for an away game on Saturday 19th September. Carlisle follows four weeks later on Saturday 17th October, and Morecambe is two months later on Saturday 12th December. The other two lengthy journeys are both in January – York City on Saturday 9th and Hartlepool United on Saturday 30th.
