Gary Caldwell has given his thoughts as City were beaten 2-1 at Hillsborough by Sheffield Wednesday.
A spirited Grecians side, missing up to seven first team squad players, took the lead through Josh Key, but were pegged back by Lee Gregory before Callum Patterson won it for the hosts.
"We can be proud of that performance, I thought we were outstanding today," Gary said.
"We changed how we wanted to press and took on that information and applied it, and we are proud of how we did that. The effort and the desire was there but we just didn't have enough.
"You can see we are missing players and we just didn't have enough in the second half to get the positive result that I think the performance deserved.
"We were extremely well set up off the ball and they didn't have many chances in the game, we played with a lot of personaility with the ball and at times controlled possession.
"At times we looked a real threat. We're learning at this level."
