Exeter City Women return to league action this weekend with the visit of Abingdon United to the Exwick Sports Hub, the Grecians looking to maintain their position at the top of the National League Division One.
Abingdon are enjoying their first season in tier four, currently sat sixth and only three points behind third placed Swindon Town. Consistency picking up points throughout the campaign, United have impressed and will be looking for a strong finish to build the foundations for next season.
Erin Hartigan (9), Lisa Francis (7) Lauren May (6) and Grace Eagles (5) have been among the goals for the Oxfordshire side, however United will be looking for a bounce back this weekend after their heaviest league defeat of the season coming last time out at AFC Bournemouth, the hosts running out 6-0 victors.
The two sides have met twice already this season. A League Cup Qualifier went the way of the Grecians in September, Sarah Stacey at the double as further goals from Jenna Markham, Ishbel Zuurmond and Tash Knapman clinched a 5-1 win. City picked up the three points on the road back in December, Stacey, Markham and Connie Pengelly with the goals in a 3-0 win at The Northcourt.
Every game and every goal are key for the Grecians as the run-in gathers pace, with goal difference looking increasingly likely to play a role in the fight for the title. After two postponements last week, City will be eager to get back to action and secure another three points on Sunday afternoon. With three away games to follow before the final two home fixtures, it is a significant few weeks ahead as this team looks to secure a spot at Tier three level for the first time in the Club’s history.
