Fresh from putting pen to paper on a season-long loan move to Exeter City, new signing Lakyle Samuel has given his first interview as a Grecian.
The 20-year-old defender has joined City on loan from Premier League side Manchester City and could make his debut when the Grecians open their League Two campaign away at Grimsby Town on Saturday.
“I’m really excited to be here,” beamed Lakyle. “It seems like a good project here, and I hope to get a good experience with the lads. Hopefully, we can create something special this season.”
The defender revealed that conversations with City manager Matt Taylor played a key role in his decision to make the move to St James Park.
“The words from Matt were good to hear, especially the level of detail he was going into in terms of my game and what I can improve on. It feels like a good place for me to come and get a great amount of experience, and hopefully I can help the team progress even further.”
Predominantly a right wing-back, Samuel is also capable of playing in central defence and believes his versatility can be an important asset during his time with the Grecians.
“I like to stay composed on the ball and I feel I've got a decent level of crossing and I'm good in aerial duels,” he explained.
“I feel like I’ve still got a lot to improve on, but hopefully I can do that under Matt and everyone here. They can help me become a better player.”
Samuel spent last season on loan at Bromley, as the Ravens won the League Two title, and says the experience of stepping away from the Manchester City environment provided him with valuable lessons both on and off the pitch.
“It was quite challenging at times, especially not playing as much and being away from family and friends, as it was my first loan,” he said.
“But I think you always gain that level of experience when you're away from home. It was good for me to get away from everything I know and start something fresh.”
Samuel also revealed what Manchester City will be hoping to see from him during his latest loan spell.
“They're hoping to see progression from last season and hopefully more games under my belt as well,” he said.
“They'd like me to get a consistent run of games, and they just keep saying to improve yourself, have that self-belief and keep improving every day. They also want me to be a good person around the training ground as well.”
Having only arrived in Exeter on Tuesday evening, Samuel has already been impressed by his new surroundings, including City's Cliff Hill Training Ground.
“It’s a nice area from what I've seen so far, and it's sunny as well, which is nice,” he smiled.
“Hopefully, I can get down to the beach and stuff like that. From what I've seen, the facilities are great here and everyone seems friendly. I just can't wait to get started with the lads.”
