All at Exeter City were saddened to hear of the passing of Ray Ellis at the age of 80.
Ray worked as commercial manager at Exeter City in the 1970s and 1980s. He later enjoyed a long career in golf administration.
Born at Exminster in 1946, Ray attended Hele's School and Exeter University where he gained a degree in geology. After working as a geochemist analysing rocks, he became Exeter City’s advertising manager in 1970 and was promoted to commercial manager in 1975. Spending fifteen years at St James’ Park, he also had business interests in Western Cine Services and Margaret's Trophies.
A golfer at Exeter Golf and Country Club - playing off a handicap of eight - he subsequently joined the PGA initially as an assistant to the regional secretary and then as a full-time tournament controller. The PGA’s West regional secretary from 1992, he retired in 2008 before continuing to work for the organisation on a part-time basis.
Our thoughts are with Ray's family and friends at this sad time.
