Ryan Rydel on becoming a Grecian

Ryan Rydel interview

Exeter City’s newest signing, Ryan Rydel, has given his first interview after completing a season-long loan move from Stockport County.

The 23-year-old left wing-back is thrilled to be making the move to Devon and is eager to get going. “I can’t wait to get started and play in front of the fans,” he said. “I’m buzzing to be here.”

Rydel was immediately drawn to the Grecians once he heard of the club’s interest. “As soon as I found out Exeter were keen, I spoke to the gaffer. He explained how the team would play and how I’d fit into the system. I just knew this is where I want to be,” he added.

“When Gary [Caldwell] told me the formation and that I’d be playing at wing-back, it really clicked with me. That’s exactly how I want to play.”

Rydel arrives at St James Park with a strong track record, having played a crucial role in Stockport County’s rise through the divisions. Over five seasons with the Hatters, he made 104 appearances, scoring six goals and providing 14 assists.

“That period at Stockport was special. Helping the club win promotions from both the National League and League Two is something I’m really proud of,” he reflected. “I’ve got the medals and I look at them sometimes and think - yeah, I want more of that.”

When asked to describe his playing style, Rydel highlighted his attacking instincts: “As a wing-back, I’d say I’m quite attacking. I love getting forward and putting balls into the box. I don’t mind the defensive side either, maybe not as much as attacking - but I enjoy the role. It suits me perfectly.”
