Exeter City Women face a tough task on Sunday afternoon as in form Ipswich Town head to St James Park having enjoyed an unbeaten start to the 2024/25 campaign.
An impressive opening day performance saw a 3-0 victory at Oxford United, Sophie Peskett scoring twice with Lucy O’Brien also netting. The Tractor Girls began their home fixtures with another win against highly competitive opposition, last season’s runners up Hashtag United defeated 2-0 with further goals from Peskett and O’Brien.
An East Anglian derby at Carrow Road resulted in Joe Sheehan’s side progressing into today’s League Cup First Round tie. Peskett making it three in three with further goals from Natasha Thomas and new signings Angela Addison and Summer Hughes sealing a 4-0 win.
We were treated to a classic at St James Park when the two teams clashed earlier in the month, a Sophie Gillies brace putting the Grecians 2-0 up before substitute Ella Rutherford hit two goals of her own to rescue a point for Sheehan’s side.
A home rout over Lewes, Peskett, Rutherford, O’Brien, Addison and Maisy Barker finding the net in a 5-0 victory, places Town in the early running for promotion and a position they are likely to remain in as the season progresses. There was a late postponement of The Blues trip to Gwalia United on Sunday, but another comfortable away win on Wednesday evening, this time a 6-0 demolition of Billericay Town with Peskett hitting a hat trick, sees Town as the divisions in form side.
With a three-game week on the horizon, Abbie Britton may use this tie to rotate her squad, but with the visitors looking for success in both league and cup this season, this fixture will be another significant test for the newly promoted Grecians.
