Danny Andrew signs on deadline day!

Welcome Danny Andrew

We are delighted to announce our first signing of Deadline Day, as experienced and versatile defender Danny Andrew joins on a permanent deal until the end of the 25/26 season.

Danny, 34, becomes City’s eleventh signing of the transfer window after a brief spell at fellow League One side Stockport County, where he made seven appearances and registered an assist on his debut.

Comfortable at left-back, left wing-back, or as a left-sided centre-back, Danny brings a wealth of experience to St James Park, having played 570 games across a 17-year professional career, including ten of the last eleven seasons in League One. Last season, he featured 38 times for Cambridge United.

A graduate of Peterborough United’s academy, Danny made his professional debut in the Championship in 2010, appearing against Blackpool and Plymouth Argyle. He went on to enjoy spells with Cheltenham Town, Gloucester City, and Macclesfield before a successful two-year stint at Fleetwood Town.

In 2016, Danny joined Grimsby Town, playing every minute of their League Two campaign and earning the Club’s Player of the Year award. He later starred at Doncaster Rovers, being ever-present in their League One side during the 2018/19 season, before returning to Fleetwood and making over 150 appearances while scoring 17 goals.

A second spell at Cambridge United followed in 2023, where Danny was again a key figure, playing in all but one league game during his first season back at the Abbey Stadium. After his contract expired at the end of the 24/25 season he signed a short-term deal with Stockport County.

Speaking about the signing, Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell said: “We spoke to Danny’s agent throughout the window and the start of the season. We felt like we could use his experience, his know-how of League One and his versatility on the left side.

“We felt like he was an important player to bring in for those reasons. He's an amazing character and he's got great experience of League One.

“He’s a big signing for us. He's been playing with Stockport who were a play-off team last year. He played 90 minutes for them on Saturday, so he's fit and ready to go, which is also a massive plus because at this time of the window, most players haven't been playing regular.”

Welcome to Exeter City, Danny!
