Leyton Orient match report

Exeter City were held to a 0-0 draw against Leyton Orient at St James Park, moving the Grecians into the relegation zone in Sky Bet League One.

Matt Taylor was forced in a change to his team before a ball had been kicked at St James Park, as goalkeeper Joe Whitworth failed the pre-match fitness test and triggered the introduction of Jack Bycroft to the XI. Academy graduate Frankie Phillips thus had his loan spell at Plymouth Parkway cut short to fill the unoccupied place on the bench.

The Grecians would also have to contend with a familiar face on the opposing starting lineup, with Demetri Mitchell making a return to St James Park for the first time since departing in the 2025 summer transfer window. Other threats were likely to come from Sky Bet League One top goalscorer Dom Ballard, having netted 21 times before play had begun.

First Half

Leyton Orient man Theo Archibald got the first shot on target when he charged down on the Grecian goal and drilled the ball towards the near post, however Jack Bycroft was able to confidently push the effort away; An encouraging start for the City keeper in his league debut.

Danny Andrew & Carlos Mendes Gomes then combined on the left flank to send an inviting cross into the Orient penalty area where Jayden Wareham was waiting. While the striker got a head to the ball, the ultimate shot was marginally misplaced and careered wide of the post.

A brace of corners close to the half-hour mark afforded further opportunities for the Grecians, the latter of which seeing Reece Cole’s ball in result in a mass scramble between both sides before the ball was cleared up-field.

The Grecians came agonisingly close minutes later when Mendes Gomes smartly played Andrew through, allowing the defender to pick out Wareham at the far post whose header was cruelly deflected off the woodwork and into the gloves of Will Dennis.

With not long left until the break, former City man Demetri Mitchell let fly a shot from tight angle that Bycroft palmed away as far Archibald on the edge of the box, fortunately though the follow-up effort met the same fate and was smothered by the home keeper.

Charlie Cummins battled through to find himself in the Orient penalty area before cutting back to the quickly arriving Ilmari Niskanen, with the Fin’s effort deflected out wide to Mendes Gomes who sent another inviting ball in towards Wareham, however the ball sailed just high of the crossbar.

As half-time loomed, a manic minute would ensue. Cole attempted one of his signature finishes towards the visitor’s goal, only to be stopped at full reach by Dennis before the O’s launched a counterattack. Prolific scorer Dom Ballard was through on goal with only Bycroft to stop him, yet the striker fumbled the opportunity and sent his shot wide of the post.

That would be that for an entertaining half of football that saw the Grecians in the driving seat for the most part.

Second Half

The second half of play would see City pick up where they left off and continue to hound the Orient penalty area. Wareham was dragged down to win a free kick on the edge of the box, allowing Cole to tee up a set piece shot that again tested Dennis.

Hearts were in the mouths of the onlooking home supporters’ moments later though when the O’s got the ball into the back of the net, yet the raised flag of linesman Lee Venamore quickly quelled celebrations in the away end. A lucky escape for the Grecians.

After a period of play that allowed City to compose themselves and grow back into the game, Pierce Sweeney cleverly rounded his marker before crossing to Cummins in the box, however the young Irishman was unable to keep the effort down and it cleared the roof of the Thatchers Big Bank.

Nonetheless, City came forward once more as Niskenen found himself in familiar surroundings as he charged down the right wing. A cross from the wing-back fell to newly introduced Akeel Higgins at the near-post and forced Dennis to get down quickly and pull off a spectacular stop to maintain the stalemate.

With little over five minutes left on the clock it was Ryan Rydel's turn to launch a ball into the box. Wareham picked the cross up 12-yards out, however as the striker looked to work into a more inviting shooting position he was quickly blocked in by the Orient back line meaning that the eventual shot was cleared away.

After five minutes of stoppage time, referee Tim Robinson brought an end to an entertaining encounter between the two sides. Results in other games across the country however meant that City now drop into the relegation zone.
