We are delighted to announce the signing of free agent Anthony Scully on a deal until the end of the 26/27 season.
The 27-year-old forward joins the Grecians with a wealth of experience in the EFL, having made almost 200 professional appearances during his career, scoring 48 goals, and registering 30 assists.
After a youth career at West Ham United, Scully started his senior career with Lincoln City, making his first-team debut in 2020 before establishing himself as an important member of the Imps' squad. His performances helped Lincoln reach the League One play-offs during the 2018/19 season, while he also featured in their run to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup that season.
Scully would go on to join Wigan Athletic in the Championship, before spells with Portsmouth and Colchester United. He joins the Grecians having last represented Shrewsbury Town in League Two during the 25/26 season, where he made 35 appearances, scoring five goals and providing two assists. Scully took part in the PFA pre-season training camp which gave him daily on-pitch training sessions, strength and conditioning and friendly fixtures.
The forward has now linked up with Matt Taylor's squad at St James Park and will provide additional attacking options for the Grecians as they continue their League Two campaign.
Speaking about bringing Anthony to EX4, Manager Matt Taylor said: “Anthony is a player we’ve come across before and I’ve got strong memories of his energy, his ability on the ball and his enthusiasm for attacking moments. He’s 27, has a strong pedigree and still has a lot to offer.
“He had other opportunities available to him, but he sees this as a good fit for himself, as much as we see it as a good fit for him. I’m delighted he’s chosen to come here and hopefully we can help him reach his peak.
“There will be a period where we have to get him up to speed and manage his workload and match minutes sensibly, but he’ll add quality and experience to a young group. He’s been in good dressing rooms, he seems like a good character, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can add.
“We’ve spoken a lot about where we need to improve now, particularly in terms of composure and decision-making. Anthony is someone who, on the pitch, will say, ‘Give me the ball in that moment, let me take responsibility for the next action.’ That’s something we’re really looking forward to seeing from him.”
Scully will wear the No.25 shirt for the Grecians.
