Exeter City’s newest signing Anthony Scully has said that he ‘Couldn’t ask for anything more’ after putting pen-to-paper on a contract until the end of the 26/27 season.
The free agent joined City after spending time away with the PFA’s pre-season training camp and couldn’t turn down the offer when he heard about the interest.
“It was only last week when I found out about the interest, glowed Anthony. “My agent told me and straight away I wanted to come down, and I've loved it from the minute I came in.
“It's the easiest group that I have settled in with so far in my career. The boys are amazing and the staff are great, and I love the City. I didn't realize how nice the City was. As a package, I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Anthony became a free agent after departing Shrewsbury Town at the end of the 25/26 season and has been presented with a few different options but was happy to bide his time for the right opportunity, something he has found at Exeter.
“I'm only 27 and I'm coming into the best years of my career, so the next move for me was the most important football wise. I want to be playing for a side and playing for a manager that has a style of football that suits me as a player, so that's why I held off from a few other options to hope that it would come. When Exeter came calling it was perfect.”
Anthony is not the first Scully to play for Exeter City, as he follows in the footsteps of his father Tony, who had a short, but sweet spell with the Grecians during the 2005/06 season. Tony only had good things to say about his time in Devon:
“He was a very complimentary of the place, and he loved his time here. It was only short and luckily enough he did well here. I’ve had a few people comment about my Dad’s time here already.”
The PFA’s pre-season camp allows players to take part in a programme designed to support footballers as they look for their next move, and it was something that Anthony enjoyed being part of.
“What the PFA to do for the players is unbelievable,” added Athony. “Going into the summer. I didn't expect that would be the case for me. Things were on last season and I was led to believe that were things available, so it came as a bit of a shock, really, that I found myself in that situation with the PFA.
“For the ten weeks that I was with them I kept myself fit, it’s amazing to leave me in a condition now where I'm ready to go.”
Despite only being 27, Anthony joins City with a wealth of experience of playing in the Championship, League One and League Two and he is keen to support the Grecians young squad this season.
“That is one of the things that the manager spoke to me about. The experience that I've got from playing now across the other divisions and being in teams that have been promoted or been in a relegation battle.
“Coming into this dressing room it is exactly what you'd be looking for, from a team looking to go towards the top of the league.”
Anthony has spent the last week training at the Cliff Hill Training Ground and has been impressed with the standards he has seen.
“The boys are brilliant and the training sessions are high standard.
“The ability of the players is high, and I’ve fitted in well with that. You’ve got a lot of players with good football IQ and good football ability, which I've really found easy to settle in to train with.”
When asked how he would describe himself as a player, Anthony said:
“I'm a player that is just full of energy. I will always do everything I can to work hard for my teammates, and for the fans because this is their club at the end of the day.
“I know how important it is that they see a player working as hard as they can and I'll aim to bring goals and assists. That is what I've done throughout my career in my best spells. I’ll bring lots of energy, lots of hard work, energy and goals.
