Matchday Family Fun: Accrington Stanley

Family Fun Accrington Stanley

League football is BACK at SJP on Saturday as the Grecians host Accrington Stanley in a 3pm kick-off.

Saturday is the 26th meeting between the two clubs. City winning 13 and Accrington 9. Most of the meetings (16) were in football’s fourth tier. Their most famous name was probably Les Cocker who was Alf Ramsey’s coach for the victorious England team at the 1966 World Cup.

The Matchday

Your match day at SJP is not just about the 90 minutes of football! Here at SJP, we want you to spend your day with us. For fans who love a variety of great food and drink alongside
live footie on the TV, the Fan Zone and Centre Spot bars make your ideal pre-match venue.

It can all start as early as 11am this Saturday, when the stadium tour guides will once again be offering FREE Saturday matchday stadium tours which allow you to experience preparations taking place in various locations of the ground, including the ever popular changing rooms and museum. To book your spaces please email stadium.tours@ecfc.co.uk.

Remembering Alan Banks

At the match we will be remembering the life and career of Alan Banks. Alan enjoyed two prolific goal-scoring spells with Exeter City. In his first season scoring the goals that secured the Grecians first ever EFL promotion.

Image
Alan Banks Tribute

Regularly scoring in red and white, his 109 goals saw him become Club’s first player to exceed the magic 100 club goals. In his first spell, as the referee blew the final whistle after the match dads would lift their child over the “Cowshed” fence. Carefully negotiating the 'primrose' bank the adoring youngsters would head for Banksy before racing back. He was a natural with the adoration. A genuine popularity that remained with him until the end.

Starting with Liverpool in the First Division (now Premier League) he scored six goals in eight league games. He moved to Cambridge City.  His 129 goals made him a target for several teams. Fortunately he joined the Grecians in 1963. A trip to Exmouth for a surprisingly hot September day saw him and Mary decide that with weather like that and the bracing air Exeter was the place for them.

Inducted into Exeter’s Hall of Fame in 2014, Alan remained active with supporters on match days and rarely missed a match or the opportunity to chat. The iconic striker and ambassador will be sadly missed by everyone at SJP.
