📝 Women's Match Preview: Maidenhead United (H)

All you need to know ahead of Sunday's match at SJP!

10 March 2024

Exeter City Women return to St James Park looking to extend the lead at the top of the National League South West Division One with victory over visiting Maidenhead United.

Ed Jackson Sankey’s side have had a positive season to date, currently sitting in eighth position and comfortably clear of the relegation places. The Magpies arrive at the park in good recent form, picking up eight points in their last five league games, United securing 1-1draws in their last two league fixtures against Abingdon United and Southampton Women’s FC.

Simone O’Brien has again had an impressive season for Maidenhead United, the popular forward hitting twelve goals in all competitions. O’Brien has been well supported by Isabella Stockon with eleven goals and Imogen Fisher who has achieved three player of the match awards alongside her four goals. The two sides have already met once this season, the Grecians victorious at York Road with a 6-2 win. Goals from Manfy Sharpe (2), Zoe Watkins (2), Sarah Stacey and Mollie Taylor seeing City home in an entertaining contest in which Stockton and Megan Halfacree replied for the hosts. The Berkshire side will travel with confidence, United were the last team to leave Devon with three points, a Simone O’Brien strike condemning City to a home League defeat back in January 2022.

Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley’s side are on the hunt for promotion and only the league title will see them achieve that goal. With the Grecians missing out on goal difference last season every game and goal is of significance and they will be hoping for a clinical afternoon against a well organised Maidenhead side. With three quarters of the season complete and AFC Bournemouth chasing City mercilessly, the fight to the finish line is well underway.

📝Women's Report: City 5 Maidenhead United 0

11 March 2024

Exeter City Women maintained their position at the top of the National League division with a comfortable victory over Maidenhead United in front of 2,660 at St James Park.

Both teams began with attacking intentions, Abbi Bond, captaining the side on her one hundredth appearance, had to be quick to make the clearance as United looked for a chance on goal before Sophie Gillies and Mollie Taylor both failed to connect with a dangerous Jess Sandland corner.

The Grecians opened the scoring with a route one set up, Sandland’s ball from defence was flicked on by Jenna Markham and Sarah Stacey raced clear to slot past the on rushing Rosie Wilmott-Joyce for the lead.

To their credit, United had not come to be spectators, looking to play from deep areas and committing players in attack to stem the tide of City attacks. However, with Gillies starting to affect the flow of the game with her movement in midfield and Amber Pollock getting the better of her opponent in wide areas, the second goal looked a certain and it arrived on eighteen minutes. Pollock was persistent in forcing her way towards goal and her low cross was perfectly weighted for Markham to tap in.

Pollock was the instigator once more moments later, her cross was blocked to the edge of the penalty area and Phoebe Baker fired into the top corner with a trademark rocket finish.

Taylor should have added a fourth with a back post header following Bow Jackson’s precise cross before Gillies and Wilmott-Joyce become locked in a battle of their own. A tame effort was comfortably gathered by the Magpies Goalkeeper before the Grecians forward thundered an effort off the underside of the crossbar. Wilmott-Joyce made another fine close range save from a City set piece before claiming another Gillies header before the break.

The second half began with a lack of intensity, Gillies and Taylor both striking wide as the momentum of the first half was lacking in City’s play. Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley made a triple substitution on the hour mark, and it was one of those changes that made an instant impact. Connie Pengelly, a lifelong City fan, firing into the top corner of the net after winning a free kick on the edge of the penalty area.

The goal lifted City, Zoe Cunningham firing in a low effort that was claimed by Wilmott-Joyce before Pengelly finished the afternoon off with her second and the team’s fifth. Taylor, who had been impressive throughout, surged past the United defence and her low cross was a gift for Pengelly to tap in and round off the afternoon.

The Grecians not only have to win games but win them well and Sunday’s game affirmed both of those targets. With a large crowd gathering for post-match autographs this was an afternoon to enjoy for the team, a five-star performance and goals to entertain the large St James Park crowd. Visits to Portishead Town and Selsey await in a busy week of league action, with AFC Bournemouth winning again, the fight for the title is hotting up.

City women take on Maidenhead United a SJP

6 March 2024

Tickets are now on sale for Exeter City Women’s clash with Maidenhead United at St James Park on Sunday, March 10.

City are flying high at the top of the FA Women’s National League South West Division One and the support this season has been incredible, with the team attracting their highest ever crowds at Exwick Sports Hub, as well as 1,550 turning out to the last game at SJP – a thrilling 5-3 win over Moneyfields.

City Women have grown spectacularly over the last few years, and while they were denied the league title on goal difference last season, attendances have blitzed previous national records at St James Park. Just shy of 3,000 people watched their win over Portishead last season, months after 2,700 attended the match against Bournemouth.

In 2021, a Devon Cup tie against Plymouth saw 1,300 attend – a number almost identical to that weeks Champions League match between Chelsea and Wolfsburg, proving there is an appetite for women’s football in the South West.

With the game taking place the day after the men host Bolton Wanderers as part of our Her Game Too weekend, we have a special ticket offer for supporters to watch both matches!

The match is kindly sponsored by DancSci, click here to find out more about them.
