✍️ Caleb Watts and Shaun Macdonald extend City contracts

Congratulations, Shaun and Caleb

15 January 2024

City duo Caleb Watts and Shaun MacDonald, whose short-term deals were due to expire this week, have both extended their stays with the club.

Both have signed new deals to take them to the end of the 2023-24 season, with Watts' contract including the option of an extra year.

Watts joined the club as a free agent in mid September, scoring on his debut against Cheltenham Town just a day later, and has made six appearances so far for Gary Caldwell's side. He is currently sidelined with an injury, but is set to return to training in the next couple of weeks.

Goalkeeper MacDonald also joined in September, adding depth to a competitive rank of goalkeepers, and has featured twice in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy against Arsenal U21 and Swindon Town, against whom he kept a clean sheet.

Speaking about the pair, Caldwell said: "Shaun has great standards every single day and has been a great addition, and you can see the four goalkeepers working hard every day to push each other.

"We can't underestimate what people like Shaun bring to the performance on a match day, whether than be in training before or during the match itself and how they contribute, such as Stevenage when he was running up and down the line helping defenders.

"Caleb burst onto the scene with his goal and debut and picked up that niggly injury followed by that more serious one he is still recovering from. He will be back on the grass this week and then over the next few weeks we will build his fitness.

"He is a player who has real quality and we felt like we should give him the opportunity to show that quality on a more consistent basis and build his fitness. Hopefully he will get the run of games he needs."
