📝 Women's Preview: Southampton Women's FC (H)

All you need to know ahead of Sunday's game

12 January 2024

Exeter City Women will go in search of extending their lead at the top of the National League this weekend as Southampton Women’s FC are the visitors to the Hub, the Grecians first home game since early November.

The Sirens have had a season of consolidation after a turbulent summer that saw several players and long time Manager Aaron Smith depart. With one league win over Selsey and draws against Abingdon and Portishead, Jamie Lloyd Davies’ new look side are sat outside of the bottom two and will be looking for a more productive 2024, the return from injury of Shannon Sievwright a big plus for the Hampshire side. Cup form has been more promising, victories over Brentford and Maidenhead setting up a clash against Championship side Watford, Lloyd Davies’ side taking the lead before the Hornets ran out 6-1 winners.

Goals have been hard to come by so far, compounded with the departure of top goalscorer Erin Bloomfield to AFC Bournemouth in December. Britt Jeal continues to impress in Siren’s colours alongside the dynamic Meg Wood. The two sides met back in September, the Grecians comfortable 6-1 victors as goals from Amber Pollock, Ishbel Zuurmond and Jess Sandland added to a Jenna Markham hat trick.

Abbie Britton and Aaron Wakley will be keen to continue their fine league form over the coming fortnight, ten wins from ten needs to become twelve from twelve before the Grecians head to Bournemouth for a top of the table clash in early February. Victory for City on Sunday would see them reach the impressive milestone of going on a twenty-four-month winning streak at home, the last away side to take points away from Devon being Maidenhead United in January 2022.
