✍️ Women: Sophie Gillies returns to City

26 January 2024

Exeter City Women have added to their talented squad with the return of former Young Player of the Year Sophie Gillies.

Gillies had an outstanding first season in Senior football, hitting forty-three league goals in only twenty appearances. Coupled with the seven cup goals Gillies scored that year, her fifty goal season is an Exeter City Club record across Men and Women’s football.

Eleven goals in thirteen at tier four continued to underline Gillies’ talent, but with that following season curtailed by COVID, the forward moved to the US to continue her education.

At the University of Irvine in California, Gillies has continued to excel, picking up Championships and individual awards to attract the attention of several Clubs in England.

Joint Manager Abbie Britton is delighted to see Gillies back in Red and White. “Sophie is a very talented player. She is on a lot of clubs radars and has had opportunities to play in the Championship since her return from the US. We want to give Sophie the chance to get back into football in England, at somewhere she is familiar, and showcase her undoubted star qualities.”

With a squad filled with attacking options, Britton is excited for what the team can achieve in 2024. “We want to keep moving forward, whatever the end of this season looks like that is always going to be the case. When a player such as Sophie becomes available we want to be in the conversation of Clubs looking to recruit them. This is an exciting signing for us and our supporters will enjoy watching Sophie play.”

Gillies is available for selection for the Weekend’s visit to Billericay, she will wear squad number 21
