Ed Turns on Newport County Victory

Ed Turns reflects on City's win at Newport County

Defender Ed Turns found himself in the right area in the 50th minute, scoring his first goal in red and white and sending the Grecians through to the knockout stage of the Vertu Trophy.

Since the opening game of the tournament, there has been a focus within the team of a desire to go as far as possible in this tournament. Ed explains the importance of getting over the line in the group stage and advancing to the knockout round of the competition; "It was a good game of football, we did what we came here to do. 1-0, a clean sheet and through to the next round. Happy days."

After signing for the Grecians in January 2025, Ed was able to get himself on the scoresheet for the first time. A ball delivered into the box shortly after a corner created a frenzy with Turns in the centre of it and producing a bicycle-kick to poke the goal home. "It was a bit of a clearance to be honest, I thought I was in my own box! It was just instinctive and it ended up somewhere in the goal so happy days."

Tonight's victory makes it five games unbeaten for City, with Ed referring to the club's repeated mantra of momentum ahead of Saturday's trip to Leyton Orient in League One action. "Us boys who started tonight, and again the players who came on, and the ones back home will breed confidence into the squad ahead of Leyton Orient."
