Exeter City and Reading FC condemn racist abuse at St James Park

Racism

Exeter City Football Club and Reading Football Club condemn the racist abuse directed from a supporter in the away end towards one of our players during Saturday’s match.

There is absolutely no place for racism - in football, or anywhere in society.

The incident was reported to the fourth official, and the match was paused whilst the officials assessed the situation, followed by a Tannoy announcement, in line with EFL protocols.

Everyone at Exeter City is extremely disappointed by this. We will do all we can to identify the individual involved and work with the relevant police forces to take appropriate action once identified.

Discrimination of any kind is not acceptable in football and as a club we will continue to work to remove this from the game. We remain fully committed to ensuring that St James Park is a safe, welcoming and inclusive place for everyone. In addition to this, we are providing appropriate support to the affected player.

Manager Gary Caldwell, said he was frustrated and disappointed by the incident. He added: “This is a problem which is becoming more and more prevalent, not just in football or in sports, but across society. It’s incredible to think that we are in 2025 and some people still think it is acceptable to shout racist comments.

“Strong action should be taken and I hope authorities in football can act and try to do something to change it. These people are not true football fans, and I genuinely believe that if you can identify them, they should not be allowed to enter a football stadium. We need to tackle these issues with zero tolerance."

Reading Football Club stated: “Reading Football Club is aware of an allegation of racist behaviour directed towards an individual during Saturday’s Sky Bet League One game at Exeter City.

“The club strongly condemns any form of racist abuse. There is no place for racism in football or in society, and we maintain a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination.

“We are committed to working with Exeter City, the relevant authorities, and any other appropriate bodies to investigate the matter. Should the allegations be confirmed, we will support the strongest possible action against those responsible.”

Devon and Cornwall Police are carrying out further enquiries into the incident and ask if anyone has any information which they believe could assist, to contact them via their website or call 101 quoting 50250264884.
