George Ley: 1946 - 2026

Remembering, George Ley

All at Exeter City were saddened to hear of the passing of former Grecian George Ley at the age of 80.

Appearing fourteen times in the club’s 1963/64 promotion campaign George Ley played for Exeter City between 1963 and 1967, making over 1000 League and Cup appearances, scoring 8 goals.

Although locally-born, he joined the club from Hitchin Town having been on the books of Arsenal. He left St James Park in an £8,000 move to Portsmouth where he appeared in 184 league games.

George also played for Brighton & Hove Albion and Gillingham before moving out to the USA to play for Dallas Tornado, Wichita Wings and Oklahoma City Slickers.

George was inducted into the Pompey Hall of Fame in 2014 and was a guest of Exeter City at a former players event in 2019.

Our thoughts are with George's family and friends at this very sad time
