Pierce Sweeney looks ahead to Bradford City (H)

Pierce Sweeney

Pierce Sweeney knows what is needed from the Exeter City side he captains on Saturday when Bradford City visit St James Park in the final Sky Bet League One game of the season.

A week on from a disappointing 1-1 draw against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium, Pierce dissected his feelings following that game: "We didn't then threaten their goal enough and got punished from a really good ball into the box; I think me and Ed James had 27 clearances with all the balls into the box, and the one we didn't get to they scored. I was quickly brought back into shape by the Burton Albion manager after the game, he told me to keep my head up with one game left."

Pierce knows what the team around him is capable of ahead of the final game, knowing that a win and lucky results elsewhere will retain Sky Bet League One status: "I know what we've got; I know the quality that we've got, I know in a defensive capacity I know what we've got and I've got confidence in that. We need to believe and have confidence going into the game and forget about the last 45 games of the league season."

Emotions will no doubt be high within the stands of St James Park on Saturday afternoon, with Pierce hoping for the best possible support once more on the weekend: "We've been in plenty of Derby games over the years and we've been on Sky numerous times, I think the fans have behaved well 90-odd perfect of the time in those. Saturday is no different; whether they're frustrated or celebrating I think the manner that we go about that is important. As a collective we need to show what kind of football club we are whether we win or lose."
